Grinnell softball team puts up strong fight against nationally-ranked WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Grinnell College bolted out to leads of 4-0 and 5-2 against nationally-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday, but the Bears roared back to secure a 12-5 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader.

Grinnell had three hits in the first game, all coming in a four-run first frame on singles by Lindsey Schultz '27, Ava Araujo '29 and Emma Skibbie '29. In the first, Kayla O'Malley '28 scored the first run on a wild pitch, Elyse Pender '27 pushed across a run on a sacrifice bunt and Skibbie hit a two-run single to right.

The Bears scored solo runs in the bottom of the first and second, but Schultz scored on an error in the third to make it 5-2. WashU scored twice in the bottom of the third, added one in both the fourth and fifth frames and scored six times in the sixth.

Skibbie, Grinnell's starting pitcher, worked 5.1 innings before giving way to Elise Strohm '28.

WashU scored solo runs in the first four innings and two more in the fifth on its way to a 6-1 win in the second game. Grinnell got its run in the fourth on a double to left-center by Zoë Salazar '29. O'Malley also doubled in the game, while Leanna Guerra '28 and Sophia Henao-Piña '29 each singled.
