Grinnell softball team tunes up for spring break trip with sweep at Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - Grinnell College's softball team got a great tuneup for its spring break trip to Florida, sweeping a doubleheader at Eureka College Monday for its first victories of the season.

The Pioneers opened the twin bill with a 12-2, six-inning victory over the Red Devils and then rallied in the second game for a 14-5 victory that also went just six frames.

Grinnell rode a 13-hit attack in the opener as well as a four-hit pitching performance by winner Emma Trani '26 and Emma Skibbie '29. Trani fanned two batters in four innings and Skibbie tossed hitless ball and struck out five the rest of the way.

Lindsey Schultz '27 led the offense with three hits, while Ava Araujo '29, Elyse Pender '27 and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 had two each.

Grinnell scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back. Schultz had a two-run double to spark the inning, while Trani and Leanna Guerra '28 each hit RBI singles and O'Malley plated another run on a groundout.

Araujo belted the Pioneers' first homer of the season in the fourth, a two-run blast, while four more runs came across in the sixth with the aid of a two-run single by Pender, run-scoring single from Araujo and RBI groundout by Emily Gonzalez '29.

The 2-4 Pioneers also had 13 hits in the second game with Araujo having three and O'Malley, Zoë Salazar '29 and Julia Marquez '29 collecting two apiece.

Grinnell fell behind 5-3 through four innings, with Marquez belting a two-run homer in the second and Araujo pushing across a run with a single in the third. The Pioneers tied the game in the fifth on an error and opened it up in the sixth with a nine-run outburst. Schultz, Gonzalez and Araujo all had RBI singles in the inning, Asianah Gostyla '28 walked with the bases loaded and Harcus plated a run on a groundout.

Elise Strohm '28 and Meghan Harcus '29 combined pitching duties, with Strohm striking out two in 3.2 innings and Harcus getting the win by tossing one-hit ball and fanning five in the final 2.1 innings.

Grinnell will play eight games at the Space Coast Spring Games in Melbourne, Fla., opening with Baldwin Wallace University and Greenville University on Friday.
