Grinnell softball team suffers narrow defeat to Greenville at Space Coast Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. - After losing in five innings against Baldwin Wallace University to start the day, Grinnell College's softball team put up a valiant effort against Greenville University before falling 4-3 Friday at the Space Coast Spring Games.

Grinnell twice led against Greenville, once at 1-0 and again at 3-2. Grinnell's run in the third inning came on an error, allowing Ava Araujo '29 to score, while Lindsey Schultz '27 belted a two-run single to left-center in the fourth.

The Pioneers managed nine hits in the game, with Araujo getting three and Emma Trani '26 a pair. Trani was the hard-luck pitcher of record in the loss, giving up just three earned runs and striking out two without issuing a walk.

In the opener, Baldwin Wallace scored six runs in both the first and third innings during the early rainy stretch of the game on its way to a 17-8 victory.

Grinnell had eight hits, with Kayla O'Malley '28 and Zoë Salazar '29 getting two each.

The Pioneers scored four runs in both the first and fourth frames. In the first, Salazar hit a two-run double to right-center, Elyse Pender '27 plated a run with a sacrifice bunt and Emily Gonzalez '29 hit an infield RBI single. In the fourth, Lexi Herrick '28 knocked in a run with a single through the left side, Pender forced in two with a double to left and Nicolette Parrott '26 hit an RBI single to right.

Elise Strohm '28 and Emma Skibbie '29 shared pitching duties, each striking out two.

Grinnell will bring a 2-6 mark into Saturday's games against Marietta College and the University of Hartford.
