Grinnell softball team endures weather issues to collect first victory of Florida trip

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team endured two lengthy lightning delays and a few rain showers Monday at the Space Coast Spring Games, but the marathon day was worth it.

Grinnell won for the first time on its Florida trip, putting together a strong all-around game to defeat UMass Boston 4-3.

The Pioneers burst out to a 3-0 lead against the Beacons, who qualified for last year's NCAA Division III Tournament, before seeing that gap erased. However, Grinnell scored once in the bottom of the sixth and held on in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Grinnell (3-9) received a stellar one-two pitching punch from Meghan Harcus '29 and Emma Trani '26, who combined on a seven-hitter. Harcus struck out three batters in four innings and Trani finished the game off, striking out one.

Kayla O'Malley '28 and Ava Araujo '29 sparked Grinnell's hitting attack with two hits apiece.

The Pioneers broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Leanna Guerra '28 hit a sacrifice fly to center, Araujo knocked an RBI single up the middle and Emily Gonzalez '29 plated a run with a single to right-center.

UMass Boston tied the game with three runs in the fifth, but Grinnell went ahead to stay in the bottom of the sixth when Julia Marquez '29 hit an RBI single to left-center.

Earlier in the day, Grinnell lost a 5-2 decision to St. Norbert College. Grinnell had eight hits in the game, including two by Gabriella Simon '29, Lexi Herrick '28 and Gonzalez. Emma Skibbie '29 was tagged with the pitching loss.

Both of Grinnell's runs came in the third inning on a two-run double to right-center by O'Malley.

Grinnell finishes its trip to Florida on Tuesday with games against Hamilton College and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
