Grinnell softball team finishes off spring break trip on impressive note

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team wrapped up its spring break trip to the Space Coast Games on a cheerful note, topping the Massachussetts College of Liberal Arts 4-2 on Tuesday.

Emma Trani '26 had a masterful pitching performance, tossing a complete-game nine-hitter while striking out four and issuing just one walk.

Grinnell made the most of its five hits, an attack that saw Ava Araujo '29 leading the way with two.

MCLA scored in the top of the first before Grinnell took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double to left by Emily Gonzalez '29. Kayla O'Malley '28 added an RBI groundout in the third and Gabriella Simon '29 plated a run with a double to left-center in the fifth.

Earlier in the day, Grinnell lost a 6-2 decision to Hamilton College. Three Pioneer pitchers issued just one earned run, with Emma Skibbie '29 getting tagged with the loss despite firing hitless ball and striking out three over three innings of work.

Grinnell got one run in the second inning on Araujo's bases-loaded walk and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 scoring on an error in the sixth.

The Pioneers have over a week off before hosting the University of Dubuque in a doubleheader on March 25.
