Grinnell falls twice in wild doubleheader with Dubuque

GRINNELL, Iowa - In a doubleheader that featured games that were polar opposites, the University of Dubuque clipped the Grinnell College softball team Wednesday in the Pioneers' season-opening home action.

Dubuque won the opener 20-12 in a game that lasted more than 2-½ hours and saw the teams combine for 27 hits and 19 walks. Grinnell had eight of those bases on balls, a figure that ranks 10th in program history.

The second game was a different story, lasting a crisp 1 hour, 25 minutes as Dubuque finished off a 4-3 victory while darkness began enveloping the diamond.

Grinnell got a strong pitching performance from Emma Trani '26 in the second game, who went the distance and fanned one batter. Ava Araujo '29 had two of the Pioneers' five hits.

The Spartans took a 2-0 lead right off the bat, but Grinnell cut into that gap in the bottom of the inning on Kayla O'Malley's '28 RBI groundout. The Pioneers went ahead in the fifth as Julia Marquez '29 plated a run with a groundout and Araujo hit an RBI single to right.

However, Dubuque scored twice in the sixth and held on from there for the victory.

The opener saw 329 pitches thrown, including 188 by three Grinnell players. O'Malley had three of the Pioneers' 13 hits, while Araujo and  Lindsey Schultz collected two apiece. Zoë Salazar '29 walked three times, which is fourth-most in GC history.

Grinnell led 5-2 through two innings, with Gabriella Simon '29 belting a two-run double, O'Malley adding an RBI single and another run coming across on an error.

Dubuque answered with nine consecutive runs and never trailed again. The 4-12 Pioneers got within 9-7 on Emma Skibbie's '29 two-run double in the third.

Each team scored two runs in the fifth, with Grinnell's coming on an error and Schultz's RBI single. The 12-4 Spartans went up 14-9 in the top of the sixth, but Grinnell scored once in the bottom of the sixth on Elise Strohm's '28 RBI groundout.

Dubuque put up six runs in the top of the seventh and the Pioneers attempted to rally in the bottom of the frame, getting two runs on RBI groundouts by Leanna Guerra '28 and Elyse Pender '27.

The Pioneers are on the road Saturday, playing two games at Buena Vista University.
