Pioneers achieve major milestone with Midwest Conference sweep

GRINNELL, Iowa - Two-hundred in a row and counting!

Grinnell College's men's tennis team, ranked 21st nationally and seventh in the region, reached a major milestone Saturday in the Bear Center Field House by winning its 200th consecutive match against Midwest Conference competition. 

POSTERThe streak, which was achieved by beating both Illinois College and Monmouth College by 7-0 scores, dates back to the 2002-03 season and is among the longest such streaks in the nation. Grinnell has posted shutouts in 43 of its last 50 meetings against league foes.

Grinnell cruised through doubles against Illinois College with wins by the duos of Albert Bostoen '26-Lucas Willett '26 (6-3), Alex Doane '28-Maxi Gutbezahl '29 (6-1) and Aman Kothari '28-Devansh Punjabi '29 (6-4). Singles winners were Willett (6-1, 6-1), Gutbezahl (6-0, 6-1), Garvin Murray '29 (6-1, 6-0), Henry Park '28 (6-1, 6-0), Bostoen (6-0, 6-2) and Satav (6-2, 6-1).

Grinnell dominated Monmouth, beginning with 6-0 shutout victories in doubles with the duos of Murray-Gervase Ngo '28, Tavin Lee '29-Kaan Mac Donald '28 and Keegan McLaughlin '27-Paul Leighninger '29. Posting 6-0, 6-0 decisions in singles were Punjabi at No. 1, Kothari at No. 2, Caden Branum '28 at No. 4, Lee at No. 5 and Juan Diego Carpio '28 at No. 6. Josh Kruger '29 added a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3.

After the victory, the team was presented a poster designed by tennis alum Karch Knoll with photos of past teams and players who contributed to the streak.

Grinnell, 15-5 overall and 4-0 in the MWC, finishes up the regular season next weekend at home against Lake Forest College and Cornell College.
