Grinnell, Luther take advantage of perfect weather to battle in softball twin bill

Vikings take pair of games from host school

GRINNELL, Iowa - After having their games rained out on a miserable day last weekend, Grinnell College and Luther College took advantage of picture-perfect weather Thursday to play a softball doubleheader.

Propelled by four unearned runs in the first inning of the opener, Luther raced to an 11-3, six-inning victory at the Softball Complex. The Vikings then needed a rally to outlast the hosts 6-4 in the second game.

Grinnell (6-20) put together a nine-hit attack in the first game, with two each by Gabriella Simon '29 and Lindsey Schultz '27. Emma Trani '26 and Emma Skibbie '29 shared pitching duties for the Pioneers, each working three innings. Trani struck out one batter and Skibbie a pair.

Luther (14-10) opened up an 8-0 lead through 2-1/2 innings, but the Pioneers refused to fold and scored in the bottom of the third on Ava Araujo's '29 single up the middle and put up two more runs in the fourth on Schultz's two-run double. However, Luther scored two runs in the fifth and another time in the sixth to win via the mercy rule.

The second game was a different story as the Pioneers held a 3-2 lead through three innings and 4-3 edge through four frames. Meghan Harcus '29 put together a valiant effort in the pitching circle for Grinnell, firing a complete game and striking out one batter.

Grinnell was outhit just 10-8, with Schultz getting two of those hits. After yielding two runs in the top of the first, the Pioneers evened the score in the bottom on Kayla O'Malley's '28 RBI single through the left side and Schultz's run on a double-steal attempt. Kala Bisterfeldt '28 added an RBI single to left in the second to put the Pioneers on top 3-2.

Luther tied it in the top of the fourth, but Bisterfeldt pushed across a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning to make it a 4-3 Grinnell lead. However, the Vikings scored two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to eke out the victory.

Simon swiped a base in the second game, giving her 15 stolen bases for the season. That ranks fifth in GC history.

Grinnell has a busy weekend on the road, taking on Beloit College in two games Saturday before playing two at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Sunday.
