Pioneer softball team earns valuable doubleheader sweep at Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College's softball team gained a valuable doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon, taking down Beloit College by 13-6 and 10-6 scores.

Lindsey Schultz '27 tied a school record for the Pioneers by belting a pair of triples in the first game. That tied the mark set three times before, the last time in 2022. Schultz now has five triples this season, which ranks third in GC history and just two away from the school mark, while her eight career triples are sixth.

Grinnell (3-5 Midwest Conference, 8-20 overall) rode a 15-hit attack in the first game and got 5.1 innings of one-hit relief pitching from Emma Skibbie '29, who struck out seven while collecting the victory.

Gabriella Simon '29 and Ava Araujo '29 each had three hits in the game, while Simon also stole two bases to boost her season total to 17. That figure ranks fifth in program history.

Grinnell scored five runs right away in the first inning, with Emily Gonzalez '29 hitting a three-run double, Emma Trani '26 plating a run with a single and Kayla O'Malley '28 hitting a run-scoring groundout.

After Beloit scored six unanswered runs, Grinnell went to work again as Schultz hit an RBI triple in the fourth, Araujo added a run-scoring double and Leanna Guerra '28 belted a three-run double. Gonzalez added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Julia Marquez '29 hit an RBI single. In the seventh, Araujo knocked in a run with a single.

The Pioneers rapped out 14 hits in the second game, with Simon and Marquez getting three each. Meghan Harcus '29 and Elise Strohm '28 combined on a strong pitching performance, with Harcus getting the win while giving up three hits and striking out four in four innings. Strohm fanned two batters while finishing off the contest.

The Pioneers rallied from a 3-1 deficit through two innings, getting a run in the top of the frame on an RBI single by Marquez. Grinnell erupted for six runs in the third, as Simon cleared the bases with a three-run double, Zoe Salazar '29 added an RBI double, Asianah Gostyla '28 pushed across a run with a bunt single and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 walked with the bases loaded.

In the fourth, Marquez plated a run with a triple as the Pioneers put up three runs for a 10-3 lead. Beloit (1-7 MWC, 3-29 overall) scored three more runs before Grinnell shut the door.

Grinnell steps out of league play Sunday to play at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The doubleheader begins at noon.
