Grinnell softball team drops 2 close games at UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Grinnell College's softball team stepped out of league play Sunday, putting up a good fight at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville before losing 3-2 and 6-3.

Emma Skibbie '29 put together a strong pitching performance in the opener, holding the hosts to eight hits and striking out two. Grinnell managed four hits itself, those coming from Lindsey Schultz '27, Kayla O'Malley '28, Leanna Guerra '28 and Skibbie.

Grinnell took a 1-0 lead in the third when Ava Araujo '29 was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The hosts scored three unanswered before Grinnell completed the scoring in the sixth on Guerra's RBI single.

The visitors lost the second game despite outhitting UW-Platteville 10-8. Simon, Schultz, O'Malley and Julia Marquez '29 each had two hits for Grinnell. Emma Trani '26 and Meghan Harcus '29 combined on an eight-hit pitching performance, with Trani striking out three.

After O'Malley's sacrifice fly in the first inning, UW-Platteville scored four consecutive runs. The Pioneers added a solo run in the fourth on Gabriella Simon's '29 RBI single and scored another in the seventh on Araujo's RBI double.

The 8-22 Pioneers have another non-conference doubleheader Tuesday, hosting Augustana College beginning at 3 p.m.
