Pioneer baseball team uses yet another huge comeback to dispose of Beloit

Grinnell rallies from 7-0 deficit to earn series sweep

GRINNELL, Iowa - In both of Saturday's games against Beloit College, the Grinnell College baseball team rallied from 5-0 deficits to win.

Grinnell decided to one-up itself Sunday, coming back from a 7-0 deficit to sail to a 16-9 victory at Pioneer Park for its first-ever regular-season sweep of the Buccaneers.

Grinnell, off to its best start in Midwest Conference play in a decade, improved to 10-2 in the league and 16-13 overall. The Pioneers lead the MWC by a half-game.

Grinnell won a slugfest, with the teams combining for 29 hits including 16 by the hosts. Nikolas Ruden '26 had four of Grinnell's hits, Stuart Cash '27 added three and Joe Chanis '27, Connor Goodson '26 and Connor Pink '29 added two each.

Adam Gallegos '28 had a masterful relief pitching performance, tossing three innings and striking out two while getting the win. Starter Crew McDonald '28 struck out one batter and Jackson Gutta '27, the second pitcher, fanned two.

The Buccaneers, who are 9-6 in the league and 16-15 overall, broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in the top of the third inning. Grinnell cut into that gap in the bottom of the frame, as Wyatt Raymond '28 belted a three-run homer and Chanis and Ruden hit run-scoring singles.

The Pioneers went ahead to stay in the sixth as Ruden plated three runs with a homer and Chanis hit an RBI single. Beloit cut the gap to 9-8 in the top of the seventh before Grinnell opened things up with a six-run output in the bottom. Goodson blasted a three-run homer, Cooper Rabin '29 and Ruden added RBI singles and Pink delivered a sacrifice fly. Grinnell built its lead to 16-8 in the eighth on Pink's RBI via a fielder's choice.

Cash stole three bases on the game, fourth all-time at GC. He and Pink each doubled twice, which is ninth in program history.

Grinnell has a busy weekend approaching, playing Ripon College in two make-up games Friday at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids before facing Monmouth in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday.
