Impressive comeback isn't quite enough as Pioneers lose doubleheader at Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Down to its final at-bat, Grinnell College's softball team put together a valiant comeback with three runs to force extra innings Saturday afternoon at Monmouth College.

Grinnell stretched the game out three more innings before Monmouth eked out a run in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 5-4 victory in Midwest Conference play.

The Pioneers, who fell to 3-7 in the MWC and 8-26 overall, outhit Monmouth by a 13-9 margin and also benefitted from a superb relief pitching performance by Meghan Harcus '29. Harcus worked 7.2 innings, giving up just seven hits and striking out five. Kayla O'Malley '28 and Lindsey Schultz '27 led the Pioneers' hitting attack with three apiece.

Grinnell opened the scoring in the top of the first on Schultz's RBI single to left. Monmouth, 8-6 in the league and 15-21 overall, then put up four consecutive runs and entered the bottom of the seventh leading 4-1.

But the Pioneers refused to fold, with Julia Marquez '29 beginning the comeback with a single to right. Elyse Pender '27 walked and O'Malley singled through the right side to load the bases before Schultz reached on an error to plate a run. Kala Bisterfeldt '28 followed with an RBI single to right and Emily Gonzalez '29 pushed across a run with a groundout to tie the contest. Neither team scored again until the Fighting Scots' game-winner in the bottom of the 10th.

Monmouth won the opening game 8-0 in five innings. Grinnell managed two hits, singles from Ava Araujo '29 and Gonzalez. Starting pitcher Emma Trani '26 struck out two batters and Emma Skibbie '29 fanned one in two innings of work.

During the day, Pender moved up to ninth on GC's all-time list for sacrifice hits in a season with eight.

Grinnell returns home to face MWC leader Illinois College on Sunday. The doubleheader at the Softball Complex begins at 1 p.m.
