Pioneer softball team gives league champ Illinois College all it can handle

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team had Midwest Conference champion Illinois College on the ropes in Sunday's opening game, grabbing a 4-1 lead and being tied 5-all through six innings.

But the Lady Blues scored once in the top of the seventh and held off Grinnell from there, securing a 6-5 victory. The visitors followed with a 10-0, five-inning victory at the Softball Complex to secure the league crown and hosting rights for the MWC Tourney.

Grinnell lost the opener despite outhitting Illinois College 8-5. Starting pitcher Emma Trani '26 scattered four hits in five innings and Emma Skibbie '29 gave up just one hit in the final two frames. Lindsey Schultz '27 had two hits to spark the offense.

After the Lady Blues scored in the top of the third, the Pioneers (3-9 MWC, 8-28 overall) erupted for four runs in the bottom as Schultz, Emily Gonzalez '29 and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 all hit RBI singles and Kayla O'Malley '28 added a sacrifice fly.

The Lady Blues (13-1 MWC, 28-10 overall) responded with five runs in the fourth, but Grinnell rallied in the fifth on Bisterfeldt's sacrifice fly to tie the game. Illinois College scored on a single in the seventh and held off the hosts from there.

Cambria Currie tossed a no-hitter in the second game, allowing just one base runner as Elyse Pender '27 walked in the fourth inning. Meghan Harcus '29 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell and struck out two.

In the first game, Pender recorded two sacrifices to boost her season total to 10.. That ranks fifth in GC history.

The Pioneers play their final home games of the season Wednesday when Knox College visits for a doubleheader. The first pitch is at 3 p.m.
