Pioneer softball team collects sweep in home finale

Lexy Determan earns 100th victory as Grinnell's coach

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team made the most of its final games on the home field for the 2026 season, and helped coach Lexy Determan reach a milestone in the process.

The Pioneers snapped an eight-game losing streak Wednesday at the Softball Complex, shutting down Knox College 10-0 in five innings and 7-4.

With the first-game victory, Determan earned her 100th win as Grinnell's coach. She achieved the milestone faster than any softball coach in Midwest Conference history.

Pitcher Emma Trani '26 was stellar in the final home game of her Pioneer career, tossing a complete-game five-hitter in the opener. She did not issue a walk and struck out three.

She also had two hits in Grinnell's 10-hit attack, as did Lindsey Schultz '27. Schultz hit an RBI double and Emily Gonzalez '29 added a run-scoring single in the first inning before the Pioneers opened things up with a seven-run second inning. Leanna Guerra '28 plated three runs with a double, Trani hit a two-run single and other runs came across on an error and passed ball. In the fourth, Trani completed the scoring with an RBI single.

In the second game, Grinnell (10-28, 5-9 MWC) broke a 3-all tie with a four-run fifth inning on its way to victory. Grinnell's offense went wild with 14 hits, including three from Kala Bisterfeldt '28 and two each by Schultz and Gonzalez.

Emma Skibbie '29 earned the pitching victory in relief, striking out three over the final 2.1 innings. Starter Meghan Harcus '29 fanned six batters in 4.2 innings.

The Pioneers scored a solo run in each of the first three innings with RBI doubles from Kayla O'Malley '28 and Bisterfeldt and sacrifice fly from Zoë Salazar '29. After Knox (8-28, 2-12 MWC) tied it in the top of the fifth, Salazar blasted a towering two-run homer to right-center, followed by an RBI single from Gonzalez and sacrifice fly from Julia Marquez '29.

Elyse Pender '27 had a sacrifice hit in the second game, tying the school mark with 11 this season. O'Malley boosted her doubles total this season to 11, which ranks 10th in program history.

Grinnell finishes off its season Saturday with a doubleheader at Lake Forest College.
