Grinnell tunes up for big series against Illinois College with victory over Cornell

Raymond ties school record for doubles in 14-3 decision

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The showdown is set!

Grinnell College's baseball team tuned up for its biggest series in years Tuesday, blowing past Cornell College 14-3 in eight innings in Midwest Conference play.

The victory pushed the 20-15 Pioneers into a first-place tie atop the league standings with Illinois College. Both sit at 14-4 in the MWC entering their three-game series Friday and Saturday at Pioneer Park. Whichever team wins at least two games will be the league champion and host the MWC Tournament.

Grinnell rode a strong trifecta against Cornell, getting stellar pitching, solid hitting and errorless defense. Five pitchers combined on a seven-hitter for the Pioneers, with Daniel Shaul '26 setting the tone by tossing three-hit ball and striking out two over the first three innings. David Haas '29 gave up four hits and struck out three in two innings, while Shea Goel '28, Jakob Runkel '26 and typical position player Connor Goodson '26 all pitching hitless ball in one inning each. Goel and Runkel fanned one apiece.

Wyatt Raymond '28 was unstoppable at the plate, tying a school record with three doubles while going 5-of-5 with five runs scored. Both the hit and runs marks rank second in GC history. Mitch Baek '29 added three hits in the Pioneers' 16-hit onslaught, while Jacob Gaynor '28, Goodson and Ryan Jackson '29 had two hits each.

Grinnell scored four times in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Raymond and Baek each had RBI doubles, Goodson knocked in a run with a single and Gaynor scored on a wild pitch. Cornell, 17-18 overall and 9-9 in the conference, scored in the bottom of the first but Grinnell got solo runs in the second and third on Gaynor's RBI double and Baek's run-scoring single for a 6-1 league.

After the Rams scored twice in the fourth, Maddux Anderson '29 belted his first collegiate home run in the fifth. It was a three-run blast that made it 9-3. Goodson hit an RBI single in the sixth and Baek plated two runs with a double, making it 12-3. Grinnell finished off the scoring in the top of the eighth on sacrifice flies by Daniel Lee '28 and Connor Pink '29.

On Grinnell's all-time leader board, Goodson moved up to third in runs scored with 45 and Raymond and Goodson jumped to sixth and seventh in total bases with 99 and 96.

Friday's game against Illinois College is set for 3 p.m. The teams have a doubleheader Saturday, starting at noon. Senior Day events will take place immediately after the opening game.

The MWC Tournament is May 8 and 9, with that winner earning the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
