Grinnell softball team drops pair of hard-fought contests at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Battling in a pair of hard-fought games, Grinnell College's softball team came up just short at Cornell College Wednesday.

Cornell rallied from a 3-0 deficit and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to capture the opener 4-3, and then held off the Pioneers for a 5-3 victory in the second game.

Grinnell (6-18, 1-5 Midwest Conference) outhit the Rams 10-8 in the opener, with Kayla O'Malley '28 collecting three of those hits and Gabriella Simon '29 adding two. Emma Trani '26 had a solid pitching performance, throwing a complete game and striking out one.

The Pioneers scored all their runs in the first inning on O'Malley's RBI double to left, a run-scoring single to left by Zoë Salazar '29 and RBI single to center from Elyse Pender '27.

Cornell (14-8, 2-2 MWC) shot out to a 4-1 lead in the second game before Grinnell rallied. Simon and Julia Marquez '29 each had two hits for Grinnell and Meghan Harcus '29 was tagged with the pitching loss despite striking out five over 4.1 innings of work.

O'Malley's RBI groundout in the top of the first put the Pioneers ahead 1-0, but the Rams rattled off four consecutive runs. Ava Araujo '29 hit a sacrifice fly for the Pioneers in the fourth inning and Simon plated a run with a single to right in the seventh to make it 5-3 before the Rams closed out the win.

On Grinnell's season leader board, Simon stole a base in the first game to boost her 2026 total to 14. That is seventh all-time for the program.

The Pioneers are off until Sunday when they host Luther College in a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is at 1 p.m.
