Grinnell wraps up milestone men's golf season at NCAA D-III Championships

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Grinnell College's men's golf team wrapped up its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Championships with a 36-hole score of 627.


The Pioneers shot a 314 in the opening round at Mission Inn Resort and followed that up with a 313 on Wednesday.

In the first round at El Campeon, Spencer Moody '29 and Roger Smith '28 each carded 5-over-par 77s, Josh Udelson '29 finished at 78 and Max Shin '29 and Everett Williams '29 each had 82s. Williams had three birdies in his round, Smith came up with two and Udelson added one.

Moody followed that up with a 6-over-par 77 at Las Colinas on Wednesday, while Smith and Udelson added 78s, Shin came in at 80 and Williams tallied an 84. Williams posted an eagle on the par-5, 500-yard fifth hole and also had a birdie. Moody and Smith came up with three birdies each, Udelson tallied two and Shin had one.

For the tourney as a whole, Moody led Grinnell with an 11-over-par 225. Smith was next in line at 155, Udelson added a 156, Shin fired a 162 and Williams had a 166.

Ryan Dunn of Oglethorpe is the overall leader at 6-under-par 137 and Illinois Wesleyan leads the team race with a 5-under-par 567. Grinnell finished 38th in the 43-team event.
