Grinnell baseball team sees storybook season draw to a close

GRANVILLE, Ohio - Grinnell College's baseball team saw its storybook season come to an end Saturday, falling by a 10-4 score to Kalamazoo College in the elimination round of the NCAA Division III Tournament regional.

Grinnell, which finished with a 25-18 mark, was making its first-ever NCAA Tourney appearance after posting firsts by winning the Midwest Conference and Midwest Conference Tournament crowns.

Grinnell hung right with Kalamazoo for the first half 5.5 innings, trailing 4-3 at that point. But the winners, who improved to 32-13 and are receiving votes for the national rankings, erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on from there.

Connor Pink '29 and Mitch Baek '29 each had two hits in the Pioneers' six-hit attack. Kalamazoo scored solo runs in the second and third innings, with the Pioneers scoring in the third on Nikolas Ruden's '26 sacrifice fly to center.

Grinnell closed within 4-3 in the sixth as Stuart Cash '27 hit a sacrifice fly to center and Baek belted an RBI double through the right side.

After Kalamazoo's big outburst in the sixth, the Pioneers got one run back in the ninth when Pink reached base on an error.

David Haas '29, Grinnell's starting pitcher, had a solid outing by issuing just four hits and striking out three in three innings. Shea Goel '28 and Jackson Gutta '27, the fourth and fifth Grinnell pitchers, each tossed hitless ball in 1.1 innings apiece. Goel struck out two and Gutta had one.

Kalamazoo moves on to play later Saturday.
