History is made: Grinnell baseball team claims first Midwest Conference title in program history

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College has been playing Midwest Conference baseball since 1957, but one thing has eluded the Pioneers since then - a league championship.

That streak came to a screeching halt on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon, as Grinnell rallied past Illinois College for a 6-5 victory in the opening game of a twin bill at Pioneer Park. With the title, the Pioneers earned hosting rights for next weekend's league tournament.

Grinnell matched the school record for MWC victories, finishing league play with a 16-5 mark following a 17-5, seven-inning loss to the Blueboys in Saturday's second game. Grinnell moved to 22-16 overall.

Just like Friday's victory over the Blueboys, Grinnell used some late-inning magic to win Saturday's opener after falling behind 5-0. Grinnell opened its scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Stuart Cash '27 hit an RBI single to center.

Grinnell sliced the gap to 5-3 in the fifth via Connor Pink's '29 RBI single to left and run-scoring double by Joe Chanis '27. The Pioneers went ahead to stay in the seventh with two runs scoring on an error and Wyatt Raymond '28 belting an RBI single to left.

Starting pitcher Daniel Shaul '26 fanned one batter and David Haas '29 struck out three. Adam Gallegos '28 entered in the sixth and tossed three innings of hitless ball, striking out two in earning the victory. Connor Goodson '26, who started the game at his usual first-baseman's spot, came on in relief in the ninth and pitched a hitless frame to earn the save and send the Pioneers into celebration mode.

Grinnell outhit the visitors 6-4, with Pink leading the Pioneer offense with two hits.

Illinois College scored four runs in the first inning of the second game and cruised from there to improve to 15-6 in the league and 24-16 overall.

The Blueboys built a 17-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh courtesy of 17 hits. In the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers tallied five runs on an RBI single to right by Cooper Rabin '29, bases-loaded walks by Ryan Jackson '29, Christopher Gulley '26 and Jacob Gaynor '28 and groundout by Crew McDonald '28.

Rabin led Grinnell's offense with two hits. Pitching-wise, the Pioneers used five players with Jonathan Gaynor '26 striking out three and Lucas Petrikas '29 and Preston Yoshino '27 each fanning one.

During the games, Raymond moved up to seventh on the program's season-best list for doubles with seven and Goodson jumped to seventh in double plays turned with 26. Chanis is now eighth in at-bats with 146.
