Grinnell women stretch NCAA Tourney streak by claiming another MWC Tourney crown

MADISON, Wis. - Grinnell College's women's tennis team showed it hadn't lost its touch against league competition, as the Pioneers blanked both Illinois College and Lake Forest College by 4-0 scores to claim the Midwest Conference Team Tournament title Saturday.

Grinnell, which has won 55 matches in a row against league competition dating back to 2018-19, advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the sixth year in a row and 15th time overall.

The victory over Lake Forest was a proverbial slugfest, with Grinnell winning the doubles point with a 7-5 victory at No. 2 by Eliana Martin '29 and Tan Mukherjee '26 and 6-0 decision by Pari Chavan '27 and Marta Gonzalez '29 at No. 3.

The 30th-ranked Pioneers, who are 16-6 overall, then won at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 with Gonzalez (3-6, 6-0, 6-1), Anika Sheth '26 (6-0, 6-3) and Martin (6-0, 6-0). At No. 1, Paige Sargent '27 gave the 19th-ranked player in the region all she could handle. Sargent lost a narrow 7-6 decision in the first set and was up 2-0 in the second when the contest was halted as Grinnell had clinched the team victory.

In the win over IC, Gonzalez and Pari Chavan '29 won 6-0 at the second slot and Nichole Henning '26 and Sheth won by walkover at No. 3. Victories in singles came Isa Voinescu '26 at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1), Martin at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0) and Mukherjee at No. 6 (win by walkover).

Grinnell will learn its NCAA foe on Monday.
