Grinnell women's tennis team enjoys successful opening round at NCAA D-III Tournament

Pioneers blank Wheaton by 4-0 score

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College and success at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament go hand-in-hand in recent years.

For the fourth season in a row Friday, the Pioneers advanced to the NCAA regional semifinals. Grinnell, ranked 27th nationally and eighth in the region, moved on with a 4-0 blanking of Wheaton College at Washington University in St. Louis.

The Pioneers kicked things off in impressive fashion, sweeping doubles with victories at No. 1 by Paige Sargent '27 and Isa Voinescu '26 (6-1) and No. 2 by Tan Mukherjee '26 and Eliana Martin '29 (6-2). Marta Gonzalez '29 and Pari Chavan '27 led 5-2 at No. 3 when the contest was halted.

Winners in singles were Gonzalez at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0), Nichole Henning '26 at No. 4 (6-3, 6-1) and Voinescu at No. 5 (6-0, 6-2). Sargent led 6-3, 3-1 at the top slot, Anika Sheth '26 was up 6-2, 4-3 at No. 6 and Chavan split sets 6-1, 1-6 before that match was halted.

Grinnell improved to 17-6 with the victory, while Wheaton finished at 16-6.

The Pioneers take on 13th-ranked Kenyon College at noon Friday in the regional semifinals.
