GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's tennis team showed it meant business in its season opener Saturday, blanking American Rivers Conference preseason favorite Coe College 7-0 in the Bear Center Field House.
The Pioneers swept through doubles play, getting wins from
Pari Chavan '27 and
Kayla Surpless '28 (6-4) at No. 1,
Logan Tom '29 and
Marta Gonzalez '29 (6-3) at the second spot and
Margot Groundwater '30 and
Eliana Martin '29 (6-1) at No. 3.
Grinnell maintained that momentum into singles play, including a 6-0, 6-2 decision by Chavan at the top flight. Other winners, in order from two through six, were Tom (6-4, 6-0), Gonzalez (6-4, 6-4), Martin (6-4, 6-0),
Laurel Buttrick '30 (6-0, 6-3) and
Sofia Bolanos '28 (6-4, 6-2).
The Pioneers travel to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament next weekend.
