2nd-half barrage propels Pioneer men's soccer team past Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A second-half barrage propelled the Grinnell College men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory at Coe College in the season opener for both teams Tuesday night.

The win stretched Grinnell's unbeaten streak against the Kohawks to 12 matches dating back to 2014. The Pioneers' goal total is their highest against Coe since 2022.

After a scoreless first half, Jack Pennachio '28 got Grinnell on the board five minutes into the second stanza on assists by Daniel Katsanovich '30 and Beacan Mottl '28. On the play, Katsanovich took a corner kick from the left side and sent it to Mottl next to the left side of the net. Mottl flipped a quick pass to Pennachio who was racing in from the left side, about 15 yards in front of the goal. Pennachio beat his defender and fired a low liner past the Coe keeper into the bottom left part of the net.

Grinnell got some more breathing room in the 67th minute when Samuel Gojjam '27 set up a corner kick from the right side. He put a perfect touch on it, booting the ball left-footed that bent into the left side of the goal.

Coe got its goal a minute later on a penalty kick. But that didn't faze Grinnell in the slightest, as the Pioneers extended their cushion to 3-1 in the 85th minute on a goal by Demi Oni '27. Oliver Klemm '29, who was credited with the assist, collected a stolen ball about 30 yards out. Klemm raced straight toward the goal before sending a pass to Oni running parallel on his right. Oni took a quick touch and fired a shot into the lower left part of the goal to make it 3-1.

Grinnell held a 13-9 edge in shots, including 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, and tallied six corners compared to Coe's two. Oni and Katsanovich each had three shots for the Pioneers, Gojjam and Klemm added two each and Pennachio, Luke Akosa '29 and Kanata Mizutani '28 had one each.

Jack Alexander '29 earned the victory at keeper, recording three saves.

The Pioneers play their first home contest of the season Saturday when Hamline University visits Springer Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
