Pioneers open the floodgates for 5 goals in 2nd half of victory over Hamline

GRINNELL, Iowa - Once the Grinnell College men's soccer team found the scoreboard Saturday, there was no stopping the Pioneers.

Grinnell erupted for five second-half goals against Hamline University to rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit for a 5-1 victory at Springer Field. Five goals in a half is tied for ninth-most in program history, and the five total goals is the most for the Pioneers in a match since 2023.

The Pioneers improved to 2-0 on the muggy day, the team's best start since the 2023 campaign. The win also marked the first for the Pioneers in their four-match series with Hamline dating back to 2015.

Grinnell spread the wealth on the scoring front, getting goals from Oliver Klemm '29, Jack Pennachio '28, Kanata Mizutani '28, Samuel Gojjam '27 and Amore Watanabe '29.

Grinnell outshot the Pipers 15-7 and held an 8-2 edge in corners.

Starting keeper Jack Alexander '29 posted two saves for Grinnell and Braydon Depew '30 added one in relief.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Grinnell evened the score two minutes into the second stanza when Klemm scored on an assist by Pennachio and Gojjam. Gojjam began the play with a free kick from the right end line. He fired the ball in front of the net, which Pennachio got a touch on and Klemm put into the net.

Pennachio broke the tie in the 60th minute when he scored on a penalty kick that he drove into the right side of the goal. Five minutes later, Mizutani tracked down a ball on the left end line and angled in a perfect shot from 15 yards out that found its way into the right side of the net.

Gojjam scored in the 77th minute on an assist by Klemm. On the play, Klemm raced down the field and flicked a pass in the box to Gojjam, who tapped it into the net.

Watanabe finished the scoring nine minutes later as he beat his defender on the left side of the goal and pushed the ball into the net.

Klemm, Ian O'Loughlin '28 and Mizutani each had three shots for Grinnell, while Pennachio and Gojjam added two apiece.

Grinnell hosts its annual alumni game Sunday at 2 p.m.
