Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

GC women's soccer team falls just short in tale of two halves versus Dubuque

GRINNELL, Iowa - In what proved to be a tale of two halves, a goal in the 81st minute proved to be the difference as the University of Dubuque escaped Springer Field with a 1-0 victory over the Grinnell College women's soccer team Tuesday.

Playing in hot and muggy conditions in the season opener for both teams, Grinnell's offense was on fire in the first half and the defense held firm as the teams played to a 0-all tie at its conclusion. Action was almost exclusively on the Pioneers' offensive half of the pitch, a fact displayed in Grinnell's 8-0 edge in shots during the first 45 minutes.

But the Spartans raced back in the second half, firing off 10 shots compared to one for Grinnell. Pioneer keeper Peyton Dixon '27 recorded numerous impressive saves before the Spartans found the back of the net on a corner kick with nine minutes left in the contest.

The Pioneers managed nine shots, with Lucy Collier '30 posting three, Rylee Howard '30 and Teya Lochridge '29 adding two apiece and Naima Axelrad '30 and Addison Thornberg '29 getting one each.

Dixon made three saves while working the entire contest in net for Grinnell.

The Pioneers take to the road Friday, playing at Simpson College at 7 p.m.
