Grinnell puts up good fight, but falls to Coe netters in season opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Grinnell College came up on the short end of the scoreboard in its volleyball season opener Tuesday night, falling in three sets at Coe College.

The Pioneers battled toe-to-toe with the Kohawks in the opening set, falling 25-23. Coe finished off the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the second set and 25-21 decision in the third.

Grinnell grabbed a 13-9 lead in the first set, but the Kohawks rallied to take the lead. The Pioneers bounced back, though, going ahead 17-16 on a kill by Charlotte Sigler '30 only to see the hosts reel off four points in a row. Grinnell got as close as 24-23 on Millie Leonard's '27 kill before Coe posted the set-winner.

Coe shot out to a 19-8 lead in the second set and then held off a Grinnell rally. The Kohawks also shot out to a big lead early in the third set before the Pioneers chipped away. Grinnell climbed within 17-15 on Paige Lundgren's '30 ace serve and later closed within 21-20 on an ace by Sigler. But Coe pulled away down the stretch to win.

Leonard led the Pioneers with seven kills and Mia Meert '30 added five kills while hitting at a .250 clip in her collegiate opener. Keira Sullivan '27 contributed four kills and Lundgren added 11 assists.

Grinnell was big at the net, posting 18 block assists with Ella Tulimieri '30 posting five and Sullivan and Sigler getting four each. In the digs department, Gracie Lim '28 led the way with nine.

The Pioneers host their annual tournament Friday and Saturday.
