Pioneer netters put up great fight against Saint Benedict

GRINNELL, Iowa - Squaring off against a team that qualified for last year's NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament, Grinnell College battled toe-to-toe with the College of Saint Benedict before falling in four sets Friday night.

The match at Darby Gymnasium, part of the annual Grinnell/Central Tournament, saw the Bennies win the opening set 25-22 before the Pioneers evened things with a 25-23 decision in the second set. Saint Benedict eked out a 25-21 win in the third and concluded the victory with a 25-17 win.

Grinnell (0-2) featured a fearsome one-two attack punch from Millie Leonard '27 and Keira Sullivan '27, who had 14 and 11 kills respectively. Mia Meert '30 contributed seven kills.

On the setting front, Kylie-Ann Smith '27 dished out 21 assists and Paige Lundgren '30 added 13. Leonard served up two aces and also had 11 digs. Smith led the charge in digs with 16, Leticia Machado '29 added 13 and Sophia Ochoa '30 had 12.

The first set was tight the entire way before the Bennies pulled away to win. In the second set, Grinnell used a six-point run to turn a 20-16 deficit into a 22-20 lead. Machado served five of those points and had an ace, while Leonard and Sullivan each had kills.

St. Benedict (1-2) came within 24-23 before Sullivan's kill ended the set. The Bennies rallied to take the third set and got out to a quick lead on their way to winning the fourth.

Grinnell finishes the tournament Saturday, meeting St. Catherine University at 11 a.m. and Simpson College at 3 p.m.
