Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell men's soccer team enjoys historical performance with victory at UW-River Falls

Pioneers are off to a 3-0 start for first time since 1999

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The last time Grinnell College's men's soccer team began a season 3-0, no player on the 2026 squad had been born.

The Pioneers achieved a feat Friday they hadn't seen since the 1999 season when they shut out the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 1-0 to give them three victories in as many outings this year.

Oliver Klemm '29 scored Grinnell's goal early in the second half on an assist by Samuel Gojjam '27, and Jack Alexander '29 weaved the shutout at keeper.

Grinnell won despite being outshot 12-6, including 8-3 in the second half. However, the Pioneers did hold a 6-5 edge in corners.

After a scoreless first half, Klemm found the back of the net in the 52nd minute for his second goal of the season and career. On the play, Gojjam set up for a free kick five yards in front of the box and a bit to the right. He sent a low line drive that nearly sneaked into the net, but caromed off the keeper's hands and right bar. At the same time, Klemm was rushing in and tapped the ball into the net. It was the second assist of the season for Gojjam and eighth in his career.

Alexander posted six saves at keeper while recording his first shutout of the season and third in his career.

Jack Pennachio '28 had two shots for Grinnell, while Klemm, Demi Oni '27, Daniel Katsanovich '30 and Gojjam each had one.

With the loss, UW-River Falls fell to 1-2-1. Grinnell is back in action Sunday with a match at Eureka College.
