Pioneer volleyball team cruises past 2 opponents at MSOE Raider Invite

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Not only did Grinnell College's volleyball team taste victory for the first time this season, but the Pioneers did so in thrilling fashion.

Grinnell recorded a reverse sweep in its opening match of the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Raider Invite Friday, rallying to topple Marian University of Wisconsin in five sets.

Marian took the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-16, but Grinnell wasn't fazed in the slightest. The Pioneers won a 26-24 nail-biter in the third set to extend the match, won the fourth set 25-19 and rallied for a 15-13 decision in the final stanza.

Leticia Machado '29 was electric at the net for Grinnell, pounding down 17 kills and hitting at a .364 clip. She also had 11 digs.

Millie Leonard '27 added 14 kills and Keira Sullivan '27 posted eight. Kylie-Ann Smith '27 distributed 37 assists and Charlotte Sigler '30 served up four aces. Machado, Leonard and Sophia Ochoa '30 had two aces apiece.

In the digs department, Ochoa had 18, Molly Kuhn '29 posted a career-best 11 and Smith and Leonard contributed 10 each.

After losing the first two sets, Grinnell was a point away from being swept after falling behind 24-22. However, a Marian service error and attack error were followed by Kuhn's ace serve for the 26-24 win.

That gave the Pioneers a dose of momentum, as they shot out to a 19-12 lead in the fourth set and never looked back. The fifth set was back and forth and saw nine ties, including at 13-all following a Marian service error. Leonard followed with a kill and Marian had an attack error to give Grinnell the victory.

Grinnell continued its impressive play in its next match against Dominican, sweeping the foe by scores of 25-21, 26-24, 25-14. In the opening set, Grinnell used a 5-1 run to pull away from a 14-all tie to take command.

The second set saw Grinnell trail early before the Pioneers bounced back. They still were down 20-18 before Leonard pounded down a kill and Kuhn served an ace to force a 20-all tie. A bit later, the Pioneers trailed 24-22 when a kill by Machado and consecutive attack errors by Dominican provided Grinnell the victory.

A big run in the third set helped Grinnell take control. Trailing 6-5, the Pioneers reeled off seven points in a row with the aid of three service aces from Emilee Appel '29 and kills by Mia Meert '30 and Sigler. Grinnell cruised from there to improve to 2-4 on the season.

Leonard led Grinnell with 13 kills while hitting a blistering .407, and Sullivan blasted nine kills and hit .563. Sullivan's percentage was a career-high. Smith had 17 assists, Appel served up a career-best four aces and Kuhn and Kinsey Carrigan '29 added three aces each. Leonard was tops in digs with eight.

Grinnell finishes the tourney Saturday with a match against Knox College.
