Grinnell women's tennis team posts impressive shutout victory at Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - In a battle of fierce Midwest Conference women's tennis rivals, Grinnell College earned an impressive league victory Sunday with a 7-0 decision at Lake Forest College.

The shutout was Grinnell's first against the Foresters in a full-length match since a 9-0 decision in 2021.

The Pioneers, who have won 57 matches in a row against MWC foes dating back to 2018-19, made a statement from the start by winning the doubles point. Collecting victories were the No. 2 squad of Marta Gonzalez '29 and Logan Tom '29 (6-3) and No. 3 duo of Margot Groundwater '30 and Eliana Martin '29 (6-0).

The Pioneers continued their momentum into singles with six victories in as many tries. Among the victories was a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6) thriller decision by Pari Chavan '27 at No. 1.

Other winners for the Pioneers, in order, were Tom (6-3, 7-6), Gonzalez (6-4, 6-4), Martin (6-0, 6-1), Laurel Buttrick '30 (6-1, 6-1) and Luiza Kohn '29 (6-1, 6-3).

Grinnell, unbeaten on the season at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MWC, faces league foes Ripon College and Luther College next Saturday at 10th Avenue Courts.
