Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell shuts down Monmouth to improve to 6-0 on the season

Pioneers are off to their best start since 1993

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team got out to a lightning-quick start and never looked back while staying perfect on the season with a 4-0 victory at Monmouth College Saturday.

At 6-0 and 1-0 in the Midwest Conference, the Pioneers are off to their best start since 1993.

Samuel Gojjam '27 continued to be a scoring machine, registering two goals to boost his season total to a season-high five. Grinnell outshot the Fighting Scots 19-5 and had 10 shots on goal, tying a season-high.

Jack Alexander '29 and Braydon Depew '30 shared keeper duties for Grinnell, with Alexander posting three saves in 77 minutes and Depew adding another save.

Grinnell, which owned the corners kick battle by a 7-1 count, got on the scoreboard in less than two minutes when Jake Lu '30 scored his second goal of the year on Demi Oni's '27 assist. Oni's assist was via a perfectly-placed corner from the left side that Lu guided into the net.

Just barely a minute later, Gojjam found the back of the net with a close-range goal on Lu's assist. Grinnell made it a 3-1 lead in the 34th minute on Jake Brecknock's '28 goal that was assisted by Kanata Mizutani '28. The goal, Brecknock's first goal of the season and third in his career, came from the right side of the net on a 10-yard shot.

Grinnell finished off the scoring five minutes into the second half on Gojjam's goal, which was the 20th in his career. Oni had the assist, his team-high fourth and 14th while wearing a Pioneer uniform, as he worked the ball to Gojjam who fired from 25 yards out into the top part of the net.

Gojjam and Lu each had three shots for Grinnell, while Oni, Oliver Klemm '30, Luke Akosa '29, Brecknock and Mizutana added two each. Ian O'Loughlin '28, Daniel Katsanovich '30 and Dax Martin all had one shot.

With the setback, Monmouth fell to 0-7 on the season and 0-1 in the league.

Grinnell is on the road again Tuesday, traveling to Galesburg, Ill., to face Knox College.
