GC men's soccer team rallies past Knox to stay perfect on the season

GALESBURG, Ill. - After a string of comfortable victories, the Grinnell College men's soccer team also showed it could win the close ones.

The Pioneers overcame an early deficit to knock off Knox College 2-1 Tuesday night in Midwest Conference play. Grinnell improved to 2-0 in the league and 7-0 overall, marking the best start for a Pioneer team since the 1993 season.

Grinnell again featured a miserly defense, allowing just two shots. Keeper Jack Alexander '29 had one save.

The Prairie Fire, who fell to 1-1 in the league and 2-4-2 overall, opened the scoring with a goal in the seventh minute.

Eleven minutes later, Jake Lu '30 scored the equalizer for the Pioneers. Demi Oni '27 and Samuel Gojjam '27 assisted the goal after Oni had a free kick on the left side, sent a pass to Gojjam who found Lu at the top of the box. Lu knocked it into the net for his third goal of the season.

The score remained the same through halftime before Samuel Gojjam '27 continued his corner kick mastery, scoring on one from the right side in the 67th minute for his team-high sixth goal of the season. It was Gojjam's second corner kick goal of 2026 and the 21st goal of his career.

Grinnell managed eight shots in the game, four by Lu and two each from Gojjam and Jake Pennachio '28. The Pioneers also won the corner kicks battle 11-4.

The Pioneers entertain Ripon College at 11 a.m. Saturday at Springer Field. The Grinnell Athletic Hall of Fame introductions will take place immediately following the contest in the southwest corner of the field.
