Pioneer women's tennis team rolls over Cornell to remain perfect on the season

Grinnell inches closer to MWC title

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's tennis team boosted its winning streak against Midwest Conference foes to an even 60 on Sunday with a 6-1 win at Cornell College.

The Pioneers, who remained perfect on the season at 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the MWC, also solidified their grasp on the league lead while pursuing another title.

Grinnell gained the doubles point to start things off, as victories came from the No. 2 unit of Logan Tom '29 and Eliana Martin '29 (6-4) and No. 3 team of Sanne Ijpma '30 and Margot Groundwater '30 (6-3).

The Pioneers continued that momentum into singles, with three players getting straight-set victories - Tom at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2), Laurel Buttrick '30 at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2) and Sofia Bolanos '28 (6-3, 6-1).

Pari Chavan '27 won a marathon at No. 1 singles, winning the opening set 7-6, losing the second 7-6 and then outlasting her opponent 10-8 in the tie-breaker.

At No. 5 singles, Luiza Kohn '29 rallied for a nail-biter victory. After losing the first set 6-4, she won the second 6-0 and took the tie-breaker by a 10-5 count.

Grinnell will compete in the ITA Fall Regional next weekend.
