Pioneer volleyball team claims 5-set thriller

Box Score RIPON, Wis. – After losing some hard-luck five-set matches in recent weeks, the Grinnell College volleyball team found itself on the good side of the result Friday night at Ripon College.

The Pioneers defeated the Red Hawks 12-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-25 and 15-8 to improve to 3-4 in the Midwest Conference and 5-20 overall. Ripon dipped to 3-5 in the league and 9-18 in all matches.

Claire Weidman '15 and Cheyenne Hickox '15 had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, for Grinnell while Bethine Moore '13 dished out 37 assists.

Lindsay Fujimoto tallied 22 digs, while Natalie Duncombe '15 added six total blocks and Hickox and Michelle Briggs '13 had five each.

After losing the opener, Grinnell led just 15-14 in the second set before going on an 8-2 run to pull away. Moore served four points during that run and Hickox two.

The third set was tight the entire way, with Ripon leading 23-22 when a service error and two service points by Fujimoto gave Grinnell the win.

After Ripon won the fourth set, Grinnell got out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth with a kill by Briggs and two service points by Fujimoto. The Pioneers followed by scoring six of the next nine points for a 9-3 edge, as Weidman served two points to spark the run.

Grinnell continued to cruise and won by seven with Sydney McClendon's '16 serve ending the match.

Grinnell will take on Carroll University Saturday in Waukesha, Wis. Match time is 1 p.m.
