Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's volleyball team finished its 2012 season on a strong note Saturday afternoon, beating Lawrence University in four sets at Darby Gymnasium.
Set scores, in favor of the hosts, were 25-21, 25-21, 17-25 and 25-21.
The Senior Day win propelled Grinnell to 5-5 in the Midwest Conference and 7-21 overall. Lawrence fell to 2-8 in the league and 8-17 in all contests.
Michelle Briggs '13 came up huge in her final match as a Pioneer, collecting a match-high 11 kills while hitting at a .364 clip. She also had two service aces.
Claire Weidman '15 had 10 kills and was one of four Pioneers to record-double digit digs. She had 13 digs, while
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 had 16 and
Diana Ossa Sierra '13 and
Sydney McClendon '16 tallied 11 apiece.
Bethine Moore '13 added 25 assists and
Cheyenne Hickox '15 four blocks.
The first set was tight the entire way and tied at 19-all before Grinnell rattled off five consecutive points, with Moore serving four of those. After the visitors scored a point, an attack error by them gave Grinnell the win.
Grinnell fell behind 5-1 in the second set but bounced back with the aid of a five-point service run by Ossa Sierra that put the hosts ahead 7-5. Briggs and McClendon also had service runs that made it a 14-7 Grinnell lead.
The visitors fought back and got as close as two on a few occasions, the final at 23-21. However, a Lawrence service error and kill by Briggs closed out the win for the Pioneers.
Lawrence shot out to a 7-0 lead in the third set and never looked back. The fourth set was close before serving runs by McClendon, Weidman and Fujimoto boosted Grinnell ahead 15-9.
Again the Vikings came back and were within 22-21 when Weidman, Briggs and
Shelby Carroll '13 delivered consecutive kills to lock up the victory.
