Box Score Lake Forest College may have been the regular-season Midwest Conference champion in men's basketball, but Grinnell College continued its dominance of the Foresters during the 2011-12 campaign.
The Pioneers rolled past the visitors for the second time in as many tries Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium, posting a 112-101 victory on Senior Day.
Grinnell finished second in the regular-season standings at 14-4 while moving to 18-4 in all games. The Pioneers will be the second seed in the MWC Tournament and play St. Norbert next Friday at Lake Forest.
Lake Forest finished 16-2 in league play, with the only blemishes coming to the Pioneers. The Foresters are 20-3 in all games.
A fast start sparked Grinnell, as a large and enthusiastic crowd cheered the home team to a 31-12 lead by the 13:19 mark of the first half. Grinnell led 62-41 at halftime and never looked back.
Griffin Lentsch '13 led Grinnell with 28 points and three assists, while
Matt Chalupa '12 added 17 points and five rebounds. Lentsch was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line as Grinnell made 22-of-26 charity shots as a team.
Patrick Maher '14 contributed 12 points and
Dominique Bellamy '13 had a strong overall game with 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Jack Adams '13 came up with five rebounds and three blocks, and
Dylan Bartuch '15 had three assists.
Travis Clark led Lake Forest with a double-double, tallying 32 points and 11 rebounds.
Grinnell never trailed in the game and was ahead 7-4 before a run helped push the hosts ahead 18-6.
After Lake Forest sliced the gap to 20-12, Grinnell scored 11 unanswered points to open up the game.
Brian McManamy '13 started things with a layup and Chalupa drained a 3-pointer to make it 25-12.
Bellamy added a basket and free throw and
Tague Zachary '15 converted a 3-pointer to make it a 31-12 lead.
The Pioneers built the cushion as large as 23 points in the first half and as big as 27 in the second before winning by 11.
