Grinnell pounds out 18 hits to rally past Simpson

Box Score Grinnell College pounded out 18 hits en route to rallying for an 11-9 non-conference baseball win over Simpson College Thursday at Indianola.

J.R. Dowrick '15 was 4-for-5 at the plate for the Pioneers with a pair of RBIs, while Mike Nodzenski '12 and John Spacapan '15 had three hits each. Matt Skelly '12, Kainoa Inafuku '14 and Drew Davis '13 had two each apiece.

Grinnell scored a run in the first when Dowrick tripled to left and scored on a groundout by Michael Goldfien '12.

Simpson tied it in the bottom of the first and went ahead 2-1 in the second. Grinnell went up 3-2 in the fourth on Spacapan's two-run double to left-center, but Simpson countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame and another in the fourth for a 6-3 lead.

The Pioneers went ahead to stay in the sixth with a four-run outburst. Davis had a two-run triple to left, while Inafuku and Dowrick had RBI singles.

Grinnell made it 10-6 in the eighth as Nodzenski rapped a two-run double to left-center and Goldfien added an RBI single through the left side.

Simpson closed within 10-7 in the bottom of the eighth, but Grinnell came back with a run in the ninth on Dowrick's RBI single to left.

The hosts scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to account for the final score.

Jason Ormond '13, the third of four Grinnell pitchers, tossed one-hit ball and fanned three over 2-2/3 innings to earn the win.

Grinnell is now 7-12, while Simpson fell to 12-15. The Pioneers play a Midwest Conference twin bill at Illinois College Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
