Dominating pitching, timely hitting send Pioneers past Central

Box Score GRINNELL - A dominating pitching performance and timely hitting led the Grinnell College baseball team past Central College, a team receiving votes in this week's D3baseball.com national rankings, by a 3-1 score Tuesday afternoon at North Diamond.

Will Pahos '14 led a tandem of four Pioneer pitchers who shut down the Dutch as the hosts improved to 8-12 on the season.

John Spacapan '15 belted his first homer of the season and Michael Goldfien '12 had two of Grinnell's six hits, including a double.

Grinnell opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. Matt Skelly '12 began with a single to center before Spacapan went deep to left field to make it 2-0.

Grinnell tacked on another run in the fourth when Jackson Markey '14 reached second base on an error with one out. He took third on a groundout and scored on Kainoa Inafuku's '14infield single.
Central's lone run came in the fifth inning.

Pahos, who scattered five hits and struck out three, got his first win of the season as he improved to 1-2. Andrew Platt '13 and Jason Ormond '13 held the lead before ace Ben Pope '12 came in to shut the door with no-hit ball in the ninth inning, earning his first save of the season.

Central fell to 23-6 with the loss.
