Box Score The Grinnell College baseball team remained perfect in Midwest Conference South Division play with a twin bill sweep of Illinois College Saturday at North Diamond.
Grinnell won the opener 8-4 with the aid of
Ben Pope's '12 five-hit, 10-strikeout pitching performance and a 12-hit offensive attack.
Michael Goldfien '12 had three of those hits and
Mike Nodzenski '12 blasted a homer.
The Pioneers finished off the sweep with a 4-2 victory.
Andrew Kelley '14 tossed two-hit ball over the final 5-2/3 innings and struck out seven without walking a batter to earn the pitching win.
Grinnell is now 3-0 in the division and 10-12 overall, while Illinois College fell to 3-5 in the MWC South and 16-11 in all games.
In the opener, Grinnell scored twice in the bottom of the first inning as Goldfien singled up the middle and came across when Nodzenski blasted a homer over the left-field fence.
The Blueboys came back with three runs in the top of the second, but Grinnell took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Drew Davis '13 led off with a single to left and scored when
J.R. Dowrick '15 reached base on an error. Dowrick eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to center by
Ronnie Gray '12.
The Pioneers scored twice more in the third for a 6-3 lead. A two-run single to left by Goldfien plated Dowrick and Davis. The teams each scored a run in the fifth, with Grinnell's coming on a single up the middle by Goldfien that scored Dowrick.
Grinnell completed the scoring in the sixth as an RBI single to right by
Kainoa Inafuku '14 scored Gray.
Pope did not issue a walk in the game as he improved to 3-1.
In the nightcap, Grinnell opened the scoring with two runs in the third. Dowrick led off with a walk, went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on
Matt Skelly's '12 sacrifice fly.
John Spacapan '15 later hit an RBI single to left that scored Nodzenski.
After Illinois College tied the game in the fourth, the Pioneers completed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Davis was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Inafuku's single to right-center. Inafuku later scored on a single up the middle by Skelly.
Kelley relieved
Max Jacobson '14 in the fourth inning and cruised the rest of the way. He did not issue a walk during his tenure while improving to 3-1.
The teams meet back at North Diamond Sunday for another twin bill, this one a makeup of a doubleheader postponed at Jacksonville, Ill., last week. The first pitch is at 10 a.m.
