Pioneer baseball team posts pair of shutout wins over Monmouth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRINNELL - Two games, two shutouts.

That summed up the big day for the Grinnell College baseball team as the Pioneers rolled over Monmouth College 10-0 in seven innings and 6-0 in Midwest Conference action at North Diamond.

Ben Pope '12 was nearly flawless in the opener, tossing a two-hitter, striking out five and not issuing any walks while improving to 4-1 on the season. Sparking the offense were John Spacapan '15 and Jackson Markey '14, who each had three hits in the Pioneers' 13-hit eruption.

In the second game, Will Pahos '14 gave up just two hits and struck out a batter in seven innings to move his record to 2-2. Jason Ormond '13 finished off the game with one-hit ball and three strikeouts over two innings. Mike Nodzenski '12 led the offense with a homer.

Grinnell remained atop the MWC South Division standings with the Senior Day wins and is now 6-1 while moving to 13-14 overall. Monmouth is 2-8 in the division and 10-21 in all games.

The first game was scoreless until Grinnell scored three runs in the fourth inning. Spacapan had an RBI double to right, while Drew Davis '13 knocked in two runs with a double.

Grinnell made it 4-0 in the fifth on an RBI single to left-center by Ronnie Gray '12 and finished off the game with six runs in the seventh. Matt Skelly '12 had a sacrifice fly, Nodzenski scored on a wild pitch, Markey had a two-run double to left and J.R. Dowrick '15 finished off the win with a two-run double to right-center. The hit would have been a triple and the score 11-0 had the first two runners not allowed Grinnell to reach the mercy rule mark.

Grinnell scored two runs in the first inning of the second game as Nodzenski blasted a two-run homer to left-center. The Pioneers made it 5-0 in the third as Skelly plated a run with an RBI groundout and Gray knocked in two more runs with a single to right.

The Pioneers finished off the scoring in the sixth when Michael Goldfien '12 hit an RBI single to left.

Grinnell is back in action Sunday with two games at Cedar Rapids. The Pioneers play Washington University at 12:30 p.m. and host Coe College at 3:30.
