Pioneers fall to Wash. U. in slugfest

Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS – The Grinnell College baseball team pounded out 13 hits, but still lost an 11-7 decision to Washington University Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers' second game of the day, against host Coe College, was rained out. No make-up date has been announced.

Sparking Grinnell's hitting attack were Michael Goldfien '12 and Ronnie Gray '12, who each had three hits. Drew Davis '13 had two hits and Kainoa Inafuku '14 had a double.

The Bears scored a run in the first inning, but Grinnell tallied two in the bottom of the second on Inafuku's two-run double to right. Wash. U. made it 3-2 in the third, 4-2 in the fourth and 5-2 in the sixth.

The Bears tacked on two more runs in the seventh before Grinnell rallied to tie it at 7-all in the bottom of the inning. Jackson Markey '14 had a two-run single to left-center, Goldfien added an RBI single through the right side and Davis a run-scoring single through the left side. Another run scored on a double play.

However, Wash. U. tallied four runs in the eighth to secure the win. Ian Sales '15 suffered the pitching loss for the Pioneers, who fell to 13-15. The Bears improved to 27-12.

Grinnell has another non-conference game Tuesday when Simpson College visits North Diamond for a 2:30 p.m. clash.
