Pioneers topple Knox to advance in MWC Baseball Championships

Box Score GRINNELL – The Grinnell College baseball team blasted out 16 hits and extended its season with a 12-0 victory over Knox College Friday afternoon in the 2012 Midwest Conference Championships at North Diamond.

Kainoa Inafuku '14, Michael Goldfien '12, Ronnie Gray '12 and Colin Tremblay '14 each had three hits for the Pioneers, who improved to 17-19, and Matt Skelly '12 had two hits. Knox finished its campaign at 16-19.

a solid pitching performance by tossing six-hit ball over six innings to improve to 4-2. He struck out five and walked just one.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Pioneers erupted for four runs. Inafuku had a two-run single to right field, while Goldfien had an RBI single up the middle and Gray knocked in a run with a single to right.

The Pioneers scored three more runs in the sixth inning. J.R. Dowrick '15 belted an RBI triple to right, Inafuku knocked in a run with a double to left-center and Markey stole home.

The Pioneers made it 9-0 in the seventh as Tremblay had a two-run single up the middle.

Grinnell added three more runs in the eighth, as Gray had a sacrifice fly, Skelly plated a run with a double to center and an error later allowed Skelly to score. The Prairie Fire were sat down in order in the bottom of the eighth to end the game via the mercy rule.

Like Grinnell, Beloit is also 1-1 in the tournament. The winner of that contest will take on 2-0 St. Norbert College at 1 p.m.
