Pioneers fall in opening round of MWC Baseball Championships

Box Score GRINNELL – Beloit College worked past Grinnell College 4-3 Friday morning in the opening round of the 2012 Midwest Conference Baseball Championships at North Diamond.

Grinnell got a run in the bottom of the first inning and that lead held until the visitors tallied three runs in the fifth. The Pioneers then tied it with two runs in the sixth, but Beloit tallied the eventual game-winner in the seventh.

Grinnell, 16-19 on the season, will meet Knox College at 3:30 p.m. Friday in an elimination game. Beloit, 18-19, faces St. Norbert College at 12:30 p.m.

Kainoa Inafuku '14 and Mike Nodzenski '12 each had two hits in Grinnell's six-hit attack, while Michael Goldfien '12 had two RBIs.

In the first inning, Inafuku singled up the middle with one out, advanced to third when Nodzenski singled and scored on Goldfien's groundout.

Grinnell's sixth-inning attack began with Inafuku's infield single and Nodzenski's double down the left-field line. Goldfien then grounded out to score Inafuku and Ronnie Gray '12 followed with an RBI groundout to plate Nodzenski.

Alex Norman went the distance on the mound for Beloit while improving to 7-3. Grinnell starter Ben Pope '12 suffered the loss and fell to 4-2.
