Box Score GRINNELL – Grinnell College's baseball team saw its 2012 campaign come to an end Saturday morning with a nail-biting 7-6 setback to Beloit College in the Midwest Conference Championships at North Diamond.
Grinnell had a magical rally in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three runs with two out to tie the game at 6-all. However, Beloit scored a run with two out in the bottom of the frame and move on to the title game.
St. Norbert College then defeated Beloit 12-3 to earn the league championship.
In Grinnell's game with Beloit, the Pioneers actually outhit the winners 14-13.
Colin Tremblay '14 concluded a huge tournament with three hits, while
J.R. Dowrick '15,
Mike Nodzenski '12 and
Michael Goldfien '12 all had two hits.
Beloit jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth. The Pioneers got on the board with a run in the fifth as Tremblay doubled to left-center with two out, went to third on an infield single by
Drew Davis '13 and scored on Dowrick's single up the middle.
Grinnell made it a 5-3 game in the sixth. Nodzenski led off with a double down the left-field line, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on
Ronnie Gray's 12 single to right-center. Gray moved to second on
Matt Skelly's single to center, took third on a bunt single by
Jackson Markey '14 and came across the plate when Tremblay singled to left-center.
Beloit got a run in the eighth for a 6-3 lead. In the ninth, with two out, Dowrick singled to left field and
Kainoa Inafuku '14 hit a double down the left-field line. An error on the play allowed Dowrick to score.
Nodzenski followed with an RBI single up the middle. Pinch runner
Yuki Kawahara '15 then scored when Goldfien sent a triple to right-center field. A strikeout ended the big inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Beloit put runners on the corners with one out before an intentional walk loaded things up. The Grinnell coaching staff then brought Davis up from his center field spot to play just off to the side of second base, and the move paid off as he caught a line drive by Alex Jennings for the second out.
However, Jake Tresemer then singled through the left side of the infield for the game-winner.
Ben Pope, the third of three Grinnell pitchers, suffered the setback.
Grinnell ended its campaign with a 17-20 record, while Beloit finished the tourney with a 19-21 mark.
