Pioneer netters give good battles to Coe, Central before falling

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's volleyball team brought tough battles to a pair of Iowa Conference squads Saturday, but fell in both contests at the Pioneers' own tournament in Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell fell to Coe College, which went through the tourney unbeaten at 3-0, to start the day in four sets. Scores, in favor of the Kohawks, were 25-19, 25-22, 18-25 and 25-23.

Grinnell then lost its second five-set thriller of the tournament, falling to Central College. The Dutch won by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-20 and 15-12.

Grinnell's Lindsay Fujimoto '15 was named to the all-tournament team following the event.

In the Coe match, Claire Weidman '15 had 10 kills while Cheyenne Hickox '15 posted a .417 hitting efficiency and Shelby Carroll '13 a .316 efficiency.

Bethine Moore '13 added 29 assists and five total blocks. Michelle Briggs '13 had seven total blocks, Hickox tallied five and Weidman four. Fujimoto led the team in digs with 20 and Emma Knatterud-Johnson '15 had 13.

After losing the first two sets, Grinnell got out of the gate in the third as Fujimoto served four consecutive points. She had an ace in that span and Briggs two kills.

The Pioneers continued to pour it on, opening their lead as big as 14-5 during Weidman's serve. Coe got as close as 14-9 before the Pioneers took off again and went ahead by as many as nine at 22-13 during Briggs' serve. The hosts continued to cruise for the win.

The teams battled on even terms most of the fourth set, and Grinnell went ahead 20-17 on a kill by Hickox. Coe raced back, though, and tied things on a few occasions before pulling out the win.

In the Central match, Carroll led Grinnell with 14 kills and Briggs had 11. Moore and Erica Tharp '13 distributed 23 and 12 assists, respectively, while Fujimoto served up four aces and had 19 digs.

Weidman had three aces and 12 digs, Moore added 13 digs and Tharp had 12. Briggs contributed eight total blocks.

Grinnell led most of the first set and held off a Central rally as Briggs' kill locked up the two-point win.

Central took the second set and bolted out to a 17-7 lead in the third. However, the Pioneers were not to be denied and gradually chipped away as Knatterud-Johnson served three points and Fujimoto had a five-point run that helped Grinnell tie things at 22-all.

Central responded for a 24-22 lead, but Carroll had a block and Moore served a point to tie things at 24-all.

There were two more tied before Grinnell finished things off with a kill by Weidman and ace serve by Briggs.

The Pioneers led midway through the fourth set before Central rallied, forcing a decisive fifth set. That went back and forth, with Grinnell's final lead being 10-9 on Tharp's kill.

After that, it was tied twice including 12-all before the Dutch scored three straight points for the win.

Grinnell, 2-14 on the season, opens Midwest Conference play Tuesday when Monmouth College visits Darby Gymnasium. Match time is 7 p.m.
