Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Led by a sizzling performance from the free throw line, the Grinnell College men's basketball team stayed atop the Midwest Conference with a 90-74 victory over Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers were 92.3 percent from the charity stripe, making 24-of-26 shots to tie the second-best success rate in program history.
Patrick Maher '14 was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line.
Griffin Lentsch '13 led Grinnell, 7-2 in the MWC and 10-3 in all games, with 15 points while Maher scored 14 and
Brian McManamy '13 tallied 13. McManamy was 3-for-5 from the 3-point line.
McManamy and
Marques Valdez '13 both had five rebounds, Maher dished out seven assists and came up with four steals and
Dominique Bellamy '13 added three steals. McManamy and
Jack Adams '13 both blocked two shots.
Three players had 18 points each for the Vikings, who dropped to 4-4 in the league and 6-7 overall.
Grinnell led by eight midway through the first half before Lawrence came back to force a handful of ties, the last at 41-all with 2:40 left. However, Lentsch hit a jumper and then Maher was fouled which also was followed by a technical foul on Lawrence. Maher made his two free throws, and then Lentsch made a pair for the technical to put the Pioneers up by six.
Lentsch then hit another jumper to put the Pioneers up 49-41 with 1:20 left. Lawrence made a slight dent in that to make it a 51-44 game at the break.
The Vikings came as close as one early in the second half and still trailed by only five with 14:26 left. McManamy then hit a pair of free throws and Maher drained a trey to put the Pioneers ahead 65-55 with 13:01 remaining.
Lawrence got within eight a few times after that, but a 3-pointer by Lentsch and two free throws from
Garrett Nitz '13 made it a 72-59 lead for the hosts and the gap never got within single digits again.
Grinnell now has two MWC road games in a row, first meeting Illinois College on Tuesday at Jacksonville, Ill. Game time is 7 p.m.
