Pioneer men's basketball team rolls over Monmouth

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team bounced back from Saturday's loss at Ripon College in a big way Wednesday night, rolling past Monmouth College 93-67 at Darby Gymnasium.

Griffin Lentsch '13 of Grinnell led all scorers with 21 points, while Tague Zachary '15 had 14 points and Luke Yeager '15 poured in 12 to go along with a game-high eight assists.

Joe Rogers '13 led the Pioneers in rebounding with seven while also grabbing two steals. Dylan Bartuch '15 had three steals, while Marques Valdez '13 and Yeager added two apiece.

Jack Adams '13 blocked a game-high three shots for the Pioneers, who improved to 9-3 in the Midwest Conference and 12-4 in all games.

Wes DeClercq tallied 16 points for the Fighting Scots, who fell to 3-9 in the MWC and 4-13 overall.

Monmouth led just once all night, that coming on the opening point of the game. Zachary followed with a 3-pointer, Maher made a layup and Adams added another layup to put the Pioneers ahead 7-1 at the 17:03 mark.

Grinnell was still up by just five points before opening things up with an 8-2 run. Jesse Ney '13 and Lentsch had 3-pointers during the spurt and Garrett Nitz '13 added a layup to put the hosts up 30-18 with 7:43 left.

The Pioneers went up by as many as 16 in the half before settling for a 49-37 lead at the break.

Monmouth was still within nine early in the second half before the Pioneers all but put the game away with a 10-2 run. Lentsch had a jumper to open the spurt, Yeager added a layup, Lentsch drained a trey and so did Yeager to put the Pioneers ahead 62-45 with 15:47 to go.

Monmouth never got closer than 14 the rest of the way as the Pioneers won easily.

Grinnell is back home again Saturday when Lake Forest College visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 3 p.m.
