Box Score WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team came up short in a battle of Midwest Conference top contenders Saturday afternoon, falling 119-110 at Carroll University.
Jack Taylor '15 had a game-high 48 points for the Pioneers, who dropped to 5-2 in the league and 8-3 in all games. He hit eight 3-pointers and made 10-of-13 free throws. Also in double figures were
Patrick Maher '14 and
Luke Yeager '15, who each had 12 points.
Maher also had five steals and three assists, while Taylor came up with three steals.
Brian McManamy '13 had a team-high six rebounds.
Jake Bast scored 27 points for Carroll, which improved to 5-2 in the MWC and 9-3 in all games.
Grinnell never led, but was only down by five points at 20-15 when Maher hit a 3-pointer with 15:02 to go in the first half. Carroll, however, answered with an eight-point run and went ahead by as many as 15 points before Grinnell slowly came back.
The Pioneers got within three points at 55-52 on a layup by
Dominique Bellamy '13 with 2:21 left in the first half, but Carroll held on and was up 63-57 at intermission.
Grinnell came within a point early in the second half, when Bellamy's free throw made it 65-64 at the 16:18 mark. It was still close a bit later, when Maher's layup made it 73-68 with 13:07 left. However, Carroll answered with a seven-point run to go up by 12 at the 11:59 mark.
Grinnell got as close as five after that, but Carroll maintained control en route to the victory.
Grinnell is on the road again this Wednesday with a league contest at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. Game time is 7 p.m.
