Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team celebrated Senior Night and Dig Pink Night in perfect fashion – a three-set sweep of Beloit College.
The Pioneers rolled past the Buccaneers 25-21, 25-19 and 25-18 at Darby Gymnasium Friday night to improve to 2-3 in the Midwest Conference and 2-21 in all matches. Beloit dipped to 1-2 in the league and 5-10 overall.
The Pioneers had a season-best hitting efficiency of .312 while pounding down 42 kills and dishing out 37 assists, team season-highs in three-set matches.
Claire Weidman '15 had 16 kills and hit .333, while her sister Evelyn added nine kills and hit a sizzling .615.
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 and
Jeanette Au '16 had 18 and 15 assists, respectively, while
Monica Knaack '17 served three aces and
Sydney McClendon '16 added two as Grinnell tallied eight as a team.
McClendon also had 10 digs and
Evelyn Weidman came up with four blocks.
Claire Weidman and
Olivia Fromm '17 had two blocks apiece.
The first set was tied 5-all before a kill by
Claire Weidman gave the Pioneers the lead for good. The contest remained close throughout, though, with the Pioneers clinging to a 22-21 lead before
Claire Weidman delivered a kill, Au had a service ace and Beloit an attack error to give the hosts the win.
Beloit broke out to a 14-8 lead in the second set and was still ahead 16-12 before the Pioneers roared back with a 10-2 run to go ahead 22-18.
Claire Weidman pounded down four kills in that span and also had an ace, while Fromm also had a kill.
After Beloit scored a point, a service error and attack error by the visitors and a kill by
Evelyn Weidman gave Grinnell the win.
The third set was also tight most of the way before Grinnell used a four-point run to pull away from a 17-16 lead. McClendon served two of those points as the Pioneers built their cushion to 21-16.
After Beloit closed within 21-18,
Evelyn Weidman had a kill, Beloit had an attack error,
Natalie Duncombe '15 and
Evelyn Weidman combined on a block and
Evelyn Weidman came up with another kill to finish off the victory.
The Pioneers have another MWC test Saturday when Lake Forest College visits Darby Gymnasium. Action begins at 1 p.m.
