Grinnell netters lose 5-set thriller to Lake Forest

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College volleyball team nearly completed the perfect weekend at Darby Gymnasium.

After sweeping Beloit College Friday night, the Pioneers took Lake Forest College to the limit before falling in five sets. Scores, in favor of the winners, were 25-23, 21-25, 16-25, 25-21 and 15-12.

Grinnell, which lost in four sets to Lake Forest earlier in the season at a tournament, fell to 2-4 in the Midwest Conference and 2-22 overall. The Foresters moved to 3-2 in league play and 9-12 in all matches.

Claire Weidman '15 had a match-high 17 kills and hit .341. She also had 13 digs and three blocks. Natalie Duncombe '15 added 13 kills and hit .263 while adding three blocks, as well.

Jeanette Au '16 and Lindsay Fujimoto '15 distributed 23 and 20 assists, respectively, while Sydney McClendon had 24 digs. Evelyn Weidman '17 added two aces and seven total blocks, while Liz Nelson '17 came up with three blocks.

After narrowly losing the first set, the Pioneers continued to stay with Lake Forest in the second but trailed 21-20 down the stretch. At that point, Olivia Fromm '17 delivered a kill and Fujimoto served four consecutive points to get Grinnell the win.

The third set was also tight most of the way, with the Pioneers leading just 17-16 before closing out with an eight-point run. Au served seven of those points, and Duncombe and Claire Weidman both had kills. Weidman and Nelson also had a block in that span.

Lake Forest won the fourth set comfortably and built a 6-1 lead in the fifth. Grinnell made things interesting, though, coming within three points on several occasions, the last of those on Duncombe's kill that made it 14-11. An attack error by the visitors then made it a two-point margin, but a Grinnell service error finished off the win for Lake Forest.

Grinnell travels to Jacksonville, Ill., to take on Illinois College this Friday. The match begins at 7:30 p.m.
